چکیده

background chitin and its derivatives (chitosan) are natural biopolymer produced from crustacean shell, which due to their active functional groups such as amine and hydroxyl have high ability to absorb heavy metals from water and wastewater. the aim of this study was to investigate zinc removal from aqueous solutions by using chitin extracted from shrimp shells. material and methods to study the removal of zinc, chitin extracted from shrimp shells was used as biosorption in a batch system. in addition, the influence of ph, initial metal concentration, amount of adsorbent and contact time on adsorption process was investigated. results the results of this research showed that the absorption capacity of zinc closely depended on the ph of solution, as zinc absorption concentration increased in terms of mg/g with increasing ph. the results of equilibrium studies revealed that zinc absorption process on the extracted chitin was desirable and followed the freundlich isotherm model and pseudo second kinetic model. moreover, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ftir) results indicated that functional groups such as amine (-nh2 (and hydroxyl (-oh) had the highest effect on adsorption of zinc. background chitin and its derivatives (chitosan) are natural biopolymer produced from crustacean shell, which due to their active functional groups such as amine and hydroxyl have high ability to absorb heavy metals from water and wastewater. the aim of this study was to investigate zinc removal from aqueous solutions by using chitin extracted from shrimp shells. material and methods to study the removal of zinc, chitin extracted from shrimp shells was used as biosorption in a batch system. in addition, the influence of ph, initial metal concentration, amount of adsorbent and contact time on adsorption process was investigated. results the results of this research showed that the absorption capacity of zinc closely depended on the ph of solution, as zinc absorption concentration increased in terms of mg/g with increasing ph. the results of equilibrium studies revealed that zinc absorption process on the extracted chitin was desirable and followed the freundlich isotherm model and pseudo second kinetic model. moreover, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ftir) results indicated that functional groups such as amine (-nh2 (and hydroxyl (-oh) had the highest effect on adsorption of zinc.

Adsorption of Zn (II) from aqueous solution by using chitin extraction from crustaceous shell

Removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater is an important environmental challenge. In this Study, Zn (II) removal from aqueous solution by chitin extraction from crustaceous shells (shrimp and crab) was investigated. The biosorption studies were determined as a function of contact time, pH, initial metal concentration, and the amount of adsorbent. Adsorption of Zn (II) increased with decrea...

Study of Co(II) adsorption from aqueous solution using protein granules produced from chicken feather

Background: Co(II) constitutes a part of vitamin B12, hence, it is necessary for human health. However, at concentrations higher than the permissible limits, humans and animals suffer adverse chronic effects. It is necessary to reduce the concentration to a permissible level. In the present study, pre-purification and thermal modification of chicken’s feather increased their porosity and ...

Kinetics of N-Deacetylation of Chitin Extracted from Shrimp Shells Collected from Coastal Area of Morocco

Chitosan was obtained from the alkaline N-deacetylation of -chitin, derived from shrimp shells (SS) collected from the Moroccan coast. Effects of temperature, NaOH concentration and reaction time on the kinetics of deacetylation were studied. The degree of deacetylation (DD = 75%) was obtained at T = 120 °C and CNaOH = 12N in a single step for 6h. It was found, from FTIR studies, that the remo...

Sorption of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solution using activated carbon prepared from olive stone waste

The performance of olive stone activated carbon (OSAC) for sorption of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions was investigated via batch technique. OSAC materials were prepared under different physially activation conditions. Olive stone waste was physically activated with N2 gas and steam gas at 900oC at 3.5h hold time (OSAC-3) was choice as the best one for Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ removal. Characterization for...

Adsorption of Lead from Aqueous Solution by Modified Beech Sawdust

Sawdust is now being investigated as an adsorbent to remove contaminants from aqueous solution. Heavy metals can be decreased very effectively with the organic material. In this research, adsorption of Pb (II) onto modified beech sawdust in a batch system was investigated. Sawdust was collected from timber mill of Qom, Iran, and modified with H2SO4 and NaOH. Then, the effe...

Adsorption of chloroform from aqueous solution by nano -TiO2

In this study, nano-TiO2 was employed for the adsorption of chloroform from aqueous solution in batch equilibrium experiments to investigate its adsorption properties. The effects of pH, initial chloroform concentration and nano-TiO2 dosage were also investigated. Optimal conditions for chloroform removal by nano-TiO2 have been then identified. Results of equilibrium experiments showed that the...
